DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The Domestic Violence (Amendment) Act 2017 is enforced throughout Malaysia. Incidents of dometic violence are on the rise and have quickly become a social pandemic. If left unchecked, it will contribute to the inevitable decline of society as a whole. The Domestic Violence Act 1994 is a law specifically enacted for the management and prevention of such cases.

Under the purview of this Act, the people listed below may report incidents of domestic violence to a Social Welfare Officer or a Police Officer, who will also double as an Enforcement Officer:

• Victim's husband / wife.
• Victim's ex-husband / ex-wife.
• Victim's son / daughter.
• Victim's parents and siblings or
• A relative who in the Court's opinion is a family member of the victim.
• Victim's lawyer; or
• in circumstances where the victim is a child or differently-abled individual (OKU), a guardian, relative or caregiver of the child / differently-abled individual (OKU) or a fellow Social Welfare Officer of the assigned Social Welfare Officer.
